The Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association remembers community founders at Waverley cemetery in Sydney

The Australian Hellenic Educators’ Association NSW-ACT-QLD honoured the memory of some of the community’s founders at Waverley Cemetery in Sydney’s coastal eastern suburbs on Sunday 19 December. Father Gerasimos from St George’s Parish Rose Bay read memorial prayers over the family tombs of Aikaterine Plessa (Katherine Crummer), Father Seraphim Phocas and Ioannis Demetriou Comino.
AHC participates in Armenian National Committee of Australia Advocacy Week

During the week of 21-26 November, the Armenian National Committee of Australia held its annual Advocacy Week. In the words of the ANC America Chairman, Mr. Ken Hachikian: “If we find that we only agree on 1 thing, and disagree on 9, let’s cooperate on that one thing. That’s thinking politically.” In the spirit of this statement, the NSW and ACT branches of the Australian Hellenic Council were actively involved in this year’s events.
AHC condemns attacks on Christians in Iraq and Turkey

The dwindling indigenous Christian minorities of the Middle East have been subjected to two major assaults in recent days. Vandals and terrorists have attacked Orthodox cemeteries on Imvros (modern Gokceada, Turkey) and besieged and killed Syriac Catholic clergy and worshippers in Baghdad, Iraq. The Australian Hellenic Council (NSW) condemns these gross violations of human rights and denounces the lack of security offered to the remaining Christians of Turkey and Iraq.

AHC proposals for the Centenary of ANZAC

The National Commission on the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary called for ideas and suggestions on how to mark this important chapter in our history. The Australian Hellenic Council, our community’s leading public affairs organisation, submitted a list of proposals for a series of activities in Australia, Hellas and Cyprus to mark the Centenary of the Australian-Hellenic military alliance.
Panayia Soumela Monastery celebrates Orthodox Divine Liturgy

AHC (NSW) TO TURKEY: Respect Rights of Christian Minorities
For the first time in 87 years, the Monastery of the Our Lady of Mount Mela (Panayia Soumela in Hellenic) echoed to the chants of the Orthodox Divine Liturgy on Sunday. It was more than a service for the Dormition of Our Lady – one of Orthodox Christianity’s high feast days.

The philhellene Member for the Federal electorate of Blaxland launched his re-election campaign last Friday night. Mr Jason Clare, known in the Australian Hellenic community for his support of the St Euphemia Parish and Community, as well as of the Orthodox College of the same name, was supported by the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Mr Wayne Swan, as well as a number of his parliamentary colleagues.

Οι βουλευτές της έδρας Higgins και Calwell στην Μελβούρνη, κα. KELLY O’DWYER και κα. Μαρία Βαμβακινού αντίστοιχα, ένωσαν τις φωνές τους με τον αγώνα υπέρ της Ελληνομάθειας στις συνεδριάσεις της Ομοσπονδιακής Βουλής την Δευτέρα 21 και την Τρίτη 22 Ιουνίου. Οι κινήσεις αυτές πραγματοποιήθηκαν ύστερα από την ολοκλήρωση του ετησίου συνεδρίου του Αυστραλιανού Ελληνικού Συμβουλίου στην εθνική πρωτεύουσα.
