Protection of the Macedonian Heritage

The Australian Hellenic Council’s membership includes organisations that represent Australian Hellenes from the province of Macedonia in northern Greece. The AHC supports the efforts of Macedonian Hellenes to defend their cultural heritage. This involves countering claims by the government of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Slavomacedonians to exclusive use of the words “ Macedonia” and “Macedonian”.

 

The Australian Hellenic Council’s efforts have focused on two aspects:

• supporting the Australian Government’s continued use of the interim name “FYROM” until Skopje and Athens arrive at a final agreement on the name; and
• educating the wider Australian community on the facts surrounding the language, culture and self-identification of the ancient Macedonians (including well-known figures such as Philip II and Alexander the Great).
